Madden Cover Curse: Truth or Fiction?

The 2013 Madden Cover is set to be released by EA Sports on April 25 - the day before the NFL draft. This year, the contenders are down to Calvin Johnson aka Megatron and Rookie of the Year Cam Newton. The contest to land on the cover of the Madden game has become sort of a popularity contest. But it got me thinking, should it be?

As a Bills fan, I wouldn't want anyone from my team to land on the cover of Madden because of the curse (commence poking fun at the Bills now). The history of the Madden curse is well-established. So it begs the question, do you believe in the Madden curse?

I personally do. Larry Fitzgerald is the only one to actually escape the curse and even that may not count since he shared the Madden 2010 cover with Troy Polamalu who had an injury-filled season. Besides Fitzgerald, every athlete to land on the cover (first one was in 1999) has since either been injured, unproductiv, or retired early for that season.

  1. I need the Madden Curse to not exist this season, especially since my fantasy football keepers are Calvin Johnson and Cam Newton. Not a terrible problem to have I suppose.

    Stats? Stats.
    Fitz:
Regular season prior to Cover: 100 catches, 1409 yards, 10 TDs
Regular season after Cover: 96 catches, 1431 yards, 12 TDs + Super Bowl appearance

    Johnson:
Regular season prior to Cover: 96 catches, 1681 yards, 16 TDs
Now hopefully CJ can follow that path! I don't think it's crazy to believe the Lions could make the Super Bowl this year either. The top of the NFC is strong and any of last year's playoffs teams could put on a Giants-like magical run at the right time.

    1. I'll trade you a bag of peanuts for Calvin Johnson :)

But seriously, the Lions chose a bad time to start getting better. The Packers are like a well-oiled machine and the Bears added some weapons to become truly dangerous. The Lions are a playoff roster, but in that division they'll be fighting for a wildcard spot. If they want to make a deep playoff run they need to keep Stafford upright and upgrade that defense. I don't see them winning the Superbowl this year.
